Keep GB separate from GiB and MB from MiB, and see why a drive’s advertised capacity differs from system display.
1 B = 8 bit; converts byte units, not network rates

Conversion basis
Drive vendors and operating systems may use different bases.
Decimal units scale by 1000: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 B. Binary units scale by 1024: 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 B. Do not mix their names or values.
Some interfaces display GB while calculating in 1024-based GiB, making a drive sold as 1 TB appear to hold about 931 GiB.
1 GB = 10⁹ B; 1 GiB = 2³⁰ B; 1 GB ≈ 0.931322575 GiB.
FAQ
Data Storage Converter · FAQ
How many MB are in 1 GB?
In decimal SI units, 1 GB is 1000 MB. In binary, write 1 GiB = 1024 MiB.
Why does a 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?
Vendors label 1 TB in decimal; a binary calculation gives about 931.32 GiB. Formatting and system partitions also use space.
Are MB/s and Mbps the same?
No. B means byte and b means bit. Theoretical 1 MB/s equals 8 Mbps before protocol overhead.
